Subject: Meant to ask in previous post ... what shows are you all watching?

I'm watching 8:

Californication
Mad Men
Dexter
The Shield
Heroes
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Fringe
Supernatural

The first four, being Cable shows and therefore 12-13 ep seasons, will all be over soon, which in a way is good as 8 shows is a bit much to be honest.

Californication is a new show for me -- one of the guys I work with lent me the first season on DVD and I just fell in love with it. It is absolutely hysterical, genuinely moving and sad, and positively the filthiest thing I have ever seen on TV. Hank (David Duchovney) is my new hero. Season 2 is struggling a little to live up to the brilliance of season 1 but I am still enjoying it.

Mad Men is still incredible and deserves all the plaudits it gets. I think I find it even more compelling now I'm working with this agency here in Paris, as there are so many similarities (although sadly not the non-stop cocktail drinking or unbelievably hot secretaries).

Dexter is great, but in order to develop the character they are taking him further and further from the realistic psychopath he was in season 1, which slightly undermines the show.

The Shield is in its very last season and is slowly building to an explosive climax. It's almost uncomfortable viewing. I think this and The Wire are probably the two shows I wish more of you guys watched as they're amazing and I'd love to be able to talk about them with you.

Heroes has definitely picked up in pace from last season. I'm not entirely sure about the direction they've decided to go in but at least it's been exciting and left me generally looking forward to the next.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles has been struggling in all honesty. There's been a slight improvement over the last few episodes, and it has potential, but really the only thing that's kept me watching has been Summer Glau, who really is very good in the role of Cameron.

Fringe I have deeply mixed feelings about. In general I don't really like JJ Abrams' shows -- both Alias and Lost drove me up the wall. And this does too. And the science crap in it makes me want to cry -- not only is it so ridiculous but it is really lazy writing, there's always a Star Trek moment when just as the problem they're facing seems impossible, someone says "Wait, if we just reconfigure the plasma coils ..." only in Fringe it's the nutty professor saying "Oh yes, I just remembered I worked on this very problem 20 years ago and invented a doodah that will magically solve this whole mess we're in." It makes for really bad drama when they do that. You're never invested in anything if you know they'll just pull a rabbit out of a hat like that. Nevertheless, for some strange reason I'm not only still watching I'm actually finding myself looking forward to the next one. I think partly because I like the three main characters a lot and enjoy their interactions, but also because the whole thing has a really creepy atmosphere to it. Some of the "events" they've had to investigate have been surprisingly unsettling. At its best it reminds me of the X-Files.

Lastly, Supernatural has gone from being a guilty pleasure, pure popcorn silliness, to being genuinely gripping in this latest season. I don't think there's been a bad episode yet. This season has had me on the edge of my seat. It's sort of come out of nowhere to being one of my most anticipated shows each week.

Any of you guys watching these? What else?

[> Not much at the moment........... -- andypandy, 18:34:23 10/24/08 Fri [1] (82.30.76.72)

I seem to have lost interest in a lot of stuff just lately but am currently enjoying:

Heroes, much better than last series although a little complex is still very entertaining, I quite like having to concentrate totally on whats going on, if I don't I soon lose track of all the new characters, the line between good and evil within everyone seems to be very blurred now which makes it all the more interesting.

Dexter, agree with your analysis of the character but hopefully they won't change him too much and he will still be the lovable psychopath we know and love.

Eli Stone, what can I say but fluffy fun fun fun!

Sarah Connor, have it recorded and will be watching the first ep of the new series tonight.

Chuck, it took a while but I love it now.

Supernatural, started out as eye candy for me but I agree with you totally, very gripping storyline now really enjoying it.

Mad Men, fantastic etc etc etc.

Think thats about it, I'm actually watching more than I thought I was!

[> [> you need to give The Sarah Connor Chronicles a few eps -- DZR, 19:48:58 10/24/08 Fri [1] (82.123.67.199)

it starts off really weak. But round about 4 or 5 eps in it gets better.

I liked Chuck the few times I saw it on TV in the UK but I can't watch anymore shows than I already am.

You'd love Californication, BTW.

had to force myself to pay attention, hopefully it will pick up as you say, I want to like it for some reason, it could be awesome but I just don't feel anything much for the characters as I should.

... that it starts to get better at ep 4. I assume we're both talking about season 2. I'm giving it a chance based on the most recent eps.

I'll stick with it, I actually like all the actors in it, its the writing that needs some work and an effort to make us care for the characters a little more.

I haven't even been following Heroes. I had too little time to hunt down links and dl so instead I took to just reading recaps. It's kind of confusing to just read about it though, I might watch the latest ep if I've got time this weekend.

If it's that much of a hassle for you to download them I'll just burn a bunch of eps onto a disc and send them to you in the post. It's no problem for me. Just ask.

That's super nice of you! In a way I guess I'd also lost intrest because I can't see something like this happening for Lost... but I'll still gladly take you up on your offer! :)

Anything else apart from Heroes? I assume your computer is okay with data DVDs? Let me know either here or on Facebook where to send it.

[> Quite a few -- RJA, 20:01:50 10/24/08 Fri [1] (81.99.124.136)

Although oddly, I'd be hard pushed to name a programme I could live with out. Nevertheless, we watch the following:

Dexter - this is really good actually, probably the only show where I have no idea what is going to happen. I agree about what you say about the character tho, but part of me thinks that this is the point. He achieves normality by acting it. But then the good aspect of the first season was to highlight everyone's lack of normality.

True Blood - I like it a lot, but some elements, particularly the main relationship, really drive me mad
Heroes - far better than last season, but all pretense about writing characters to care about has been sacrificed for plot

Pushing Daisies - enjoying, but seems something is missing which I can't place my finger on

Ugly Betty - enjoying, and back to season 1 heights for guilty pleasure TV

Fringe - hate it in every way possible. I love(d) Alias and Lost, but this takes all the worst elements and brings it into one show. It is a lazy, derivative boring hour which feels like two.

[> [> I pretty much agree with you about Fringe and yet ... -- DZR, 22:59:33 10/24/08 Fri [1] (83.202.5.36)

... somehow there's still something about that I find enjoyable. I suspect that as with all other JJ Abrams' shows that won't last.
