It is rather refreshing to hear all this open, honest, unguarded, hostility come to the surface even if it is based, for the most, on personal observation. Beginning in the late 1950's and early 1960's the Federal, State, and local governments did all they could to destroy the concept of close-knit neighborhoods in order to foster a more heterogeneous blend of cultures in the hope that a comingling of diverse worlds would produce a greater understanding and tolerance. Obviously, after more than half a century the experiment has thus far proved to be a complete failure. As an Italian who grew up in Canarsie fifty something years ago I was part of that experiment and I can sympathize with each of the responders, both white and black. No one is guiltless. Canarsie was once a wonderful, relatively crime free square mile of friends and families who cared for each other. It isn't today. But what is the point of this thread? A continuation of hostilities? A desire to return to a past that no longer exists, and never will again? A refusal to accept what is rather than what should have been? It really is time to let go of the anger. It will only eat away at you. Our prejudices will never die, despite what governments do to crush them. I doubt there will ever be harmony among people and that may be what nature intended. I just believe it is time to consign the good memories of the past to history and accept Canarsie as it is today and never will be again.
