 The mirrors drain life energy from the creatures inside them and channel it into the crystal in the center. The crystal then projects the spell that makes the city hidden to outsiders.

Initially, they only used volunteers of their own kin. Those with the special abilities told us that. When their numbers dwindled, they started turning to volunteers from outside. When THOSE ran short, then they started kidnapping people.
