I agree that neither was great, but I have to give the edge to Obama with regard to the debate.

Below are parts of stories taken form wbz and Bostonchannel.com. Most articles I’ve read say pretty much the same thing.

Why did voters' image of Obama improve? Many volunteered that they were impressed by his poise and knowledge about the issues, that he was more knowledgeable about the issues than they thought previously. When it came to McCain, those same voters said he "didn't control himself well under pressure," that he was "angry and bad-tempered," and that he "talked too much about the past."

Of the people responding to a CNN-Opinion Research poll, 51 percent said Obama did a better job, while 38 percent said it was McCain.
The people who were polled generally considered Obama more intelligent, likable and in touch with people's problems. By modest margins, he was also seen as the stronger leader and more sincere.
And most said McCain spent more time than Obama attacking his opponent.
CBS News polled a group of people who weren't committed to a candidate, and 39 percent said Obama won the debate. Another 24 percent said McCain did. Thirty-seven percent said it was a tie.
In that poll, twice as many said Obama understands their needs than said so about McCain.
