My Daddy, an Army corporal in the European theater during WWII, a man with humor in the face of conflict or a crisis. Would make us laugh instead of panic, like during the earthquake of 1971. My uncle, a Marine drill sergeant at Camp Pendleton during Vietnam, often visited my Daddy. He was a very soft spoken and calm man, it was hard to imagine him as mean and tough. My Mother for having married my father and remained together until he passed away in 1980, and for welcoming her cousin, the drill sergeant, to spend many weekends with us during the late 60s. It was my uncle who was very instrumental in arranging the 21-gun salute, the casket draped with the U.S. flag at Daddy's funeral. Bravery and perseverance come to mind. They all make me proud.

was in WWII in the Army Air Corps (prior to the existance of the Air Force). He wanted to be in since he was little - my favorite story was how this guy in uniform came to the door and asked for Ed, and my grandma asked if he was sure, and produced my 7 year old dad who'd filled out the paperwork to join the army air corps back then! Then when he did get in, they had them on a train from Chicago with the windows all closed/darkened, and they'd stop every once in a while to let some off for one base or another; he had NO clue what his destination or armed force would be - there were a handful left for the last stop which was in Florida for the army air corps - they opened the windows and doors to palm trees and sun; he was in woolen long underwear but said he'd gone to Heaven!
