was in WWII in the Army Air Corps (prior to the existance of the Air Force). He wanted to be in since he was little - my favorite story was how this guy in uniform came to the door and asked for Ed, and my grandma asked if he was sure, and produced my 7 year old dad who'd filled out the paperwork to join the army air corps back then! Then when he did get in, they had them on a train from Chicago with the windows all closed/darkened, and they'd stop every once in a while to let some off for one base or another; he had NO clue what his destination or armed force would be - there were a handful left for the last stop which was in Florida for the army air corps - they opened the windows and doors to palm trees and sun; he was in woolen long underwear but said he'd gone to Heaven!
