Subject: Well, today was rough.

My dad's left arm and left leg are almost completely immobile. He walked into the ER and his symptoms worsened over two days. He was very depressed today. An occupational therapist told him he would likely only be able to walk a few feet and be able to feed himself and shave. The neurologist, on the other hand, said he could realistically expect to recover most of his mobility. It has been a roller coaster. A very difficult, sad roller coaster.

i've been on that roller coaster. i don't like roller coasters. don't listen to any negative prognosis from a health care professional. this is a delicate science and every individual is different.

so what's the worst is a little limited mobility? that's ok.

your dad is "only" a few years older than me! we're NOT OLD! occupational/physical therapy DOES WORK.

(((((hugs))))) to you and all your loved ones.

a) your dad's NOT old, and
2)Occupational therapy works great...I'm not sure I'd want THAT OT...but the neurologist sounds like they know what they are talking about, and ITA...He's going to get better. That OT might be thinking about peeps who are trying to get on disability, not your dad who has lots of peeps pulling for him, and working with him, that aren't going to settle.

My dad's 62 and he doesn't take care of himself like he should. I can all too easily imagine what you're going through. I guess all I can say is that I'll keep a positive thought for both of you.

I'd take the neurologist's opinion WAY over the therapist's. That dumbass had no right to take hope and determination away from your Dad. Personally, I'd demand a new OT, and register a complaint against this person.

Boy, my Dad started having strokes when he was about 70. He had them until he passed away. The first stroke seemed to be the most devistating because of the stigma of a "stroke". Dad recovered pretty well after each stroke, and with each one, they found somethings else "wrong" with him that the MDs fixed.

I think the first stroke was the scariest, but Dad bounced back and started driving again. The ones after were probably worse but with the right help, he recovered. He had the most positive therapists that did absolute wonders for him. His speech therapist was a freakin' genius. His PT was a PT to the stars and Dad really liked that!

Also, if I recall correctly, there was one time when Dad went to the ER and they said you are "having" a stroke, not had, and they had to wait & see when it was over to properly assess him & see what he lost that time.

Sending only positive thoughts, much love & prayers.

I'm sorry you're all going through this. Your dad is still young, and I would think an excellent candidate for more of a recovery than most. I know it sounds corny, but with encouragement, a person can beat many things. With all of you rallying around him and cheering him on, he will regain his strength--both physically and mentally. And, of course, you know he and all of your family have our thoughts and prayers. Mine included.
