Keith, one thing I want to emphasize here is everybody has find their OWN spirituality! The belief in GOD versus religeon is an important distiction. There are some religeons that think no one but they are right - that is not spirituality - that is hypocrasy(sp?). See the reason for much of the peace you see is because the people involved have astrong spirituality. I was raised to believe that it is WRONG to tell other people that their beliefs are wrong or will send them to hell. What makes one man the judge of another in any way, much less in something as personal as our beliefs? That would be as ludicrous as me saying - you will end up in hell if you love your girlfriend and not that blond girl across the street in town for one day! Our spirit is eternal (I believe) therefore we have to decide what feels right for it. I have seen so much hate and anger and violence done in the name of religeon - as you too have in the last few years - that for me all that matters is my belief in God - and I do not mean him the belief in Him manifesting on earth only 2000 years ago - I mean the being that caused two atoms to collide and begin this planet we live on and caused two oposite energies to connect and create life millions of years ago! I do not condemn those whose beliefs are different. I have an incredibly strong belief in god and am very spiritual - but I find the way that people use religeon as an excuse to hate or call someone names intolerable! The fact that Rachel was uncomfortable mentioning her strength of belief in Jesus is wrong!Tell me, if she had said Chenresig - the buddhist god of compassion, or the East indian godess khali - she of many aspects, or had she simlpy said she had a love of The Great Spirit that no one understood, would that have made the dicomfort others made her feel any less real, less hurtful or more rightious? I very rarely speak of my own beliefs other than that of my strong belief in god - let people take it as they will. I do not tell others what they have a right to believe, I don't feel they have a right to tell me. It is like when you hit yuor thumb with a hammer and some ass across the room says "shake it off" don't you just wanna say, "hey buddy, come over and I'll hit your thumb just as hard and THEN you can shake it off"! The difference is with spitituality NO TWO PEOPLE will ever have the same experience! You and only you can decide what you believe in or how you feel or where you feel most at peace. Explore different spiritual avenues and see what feels right for you. YOU WILL KNOW! When yuo find that belief you feel that peacefulness steal over you and it is as visible to others on the outside as it is to you on the inside. As I said my belief system is my own - and many are not comfortable with it and make fun of me because of it, but friends have experienced my reaction to occurances when I am in my place of personal peace. They can see the transformation that occurs within my eyes. I have been out of sync spiritually for a few years for various reasons and am just getting my balance back within - this is coming across to people in LA just by hearing my voice over the phone! When we lose who we are spiritually we lose a part of ourselves. And is your entire family ateheist, or agnostic? Do they tell you there is NO god or do they simply not practice a religeon? If the are agnostic rather than atheist - ask them about their personal belief sytem as sincerely as you did Sarah - they should have no problem talking about it if they know you are sincere. Most people respond to sincerity - do you have any friends who are Am. indians, or from china or japan or e. india?? Ask them all to try to help you understand their beliefs. I was taught that if we want others to accept and tolerate our beliefs, WE MUST accept, tolerate and also understand their beliefs. This is so true! All I like to point out when people tell me I am wrong, is that my god is a kind god and about LOVE. I do not wish to be part of some belief where 95% of the world will be supposedly punished for not feeling exactly the same way - I prefer to believe that GOD IS LOVE. And none of us will know the whole story until we die anyway - and hopefully that is a long way off for everybody here! I will end this here - sorry it was so long, but it is a very compicated and personal subject you asked about! :) F
