I have always told my boys that they can never start a fight, but they can finish one.. except that they must never hit a girl.
The stress, the cliques, the racial and class differences, very little after-school supervision of the kids with the most problems.. it all adds up to these problems of bullying and, in many cases, self-defense.
The kids all feel that they must prove themselves to fit in. It is a disgusting attitude that will take a lot of time to break. By that time, however, these kids have moved on and another group has come up.
Too many kids feel that they are on the outside looking in, and then they react to that feeling in very inappropriate ways .. either by going to the extreme of pushing themselves away more and more, or by isolating themselves emotionally (internalizing the anger) creating a timebomb ready to go off at any time. Too many parents are just not there to be there for these kids.
There are many programs designed to defuse these issues that are being developed throughout the country. I don't know what our school system is doing about them, but I can say that I have monitored the aol IM's and emails in my home and can see that the need is there. Who, however, wants to pay for these type of programs when the priorities are passing the MCAS and shoving kids into school weeks before the facility is ready so as not to make the teachers have to make up time at the other end of the year (thats just my opinion.. i have no idea how much of it is fact).
I'm rambling again.. sorry about that.. just sort of frustrated that we can all see the problem, but can do little about it. The politicians and the unions control the schools, and as long as we keep pumping money in they will continue to perform with the same lackluster results. So many of our kids do so well, and thats to be commended, but even more do not, and that needs to be resolved.
