Here are some answers to your questions from http://www.legion.org/americanism/flagcode.htm .

"(c) The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free. [So putting it on the hood of a car is not proper etiquette.]

"(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free."

And there's a lot more about the flag's precedence, where the union (star field) should be, etc.

I particularly don't think the flag should be used as a bandana on a man's head like a common kerchief. Yuck! Now this doesn't mean stylized flag-like apparel, but something that looks like an actual flag, even remotely resembling the actual layout and dimensions.

Regarding disposing of the flag, you can burn it in a respectful manner, or better yet, turn it over to the American Legion. They have a ceremony to accomplish this.
