Subject: For Crying out Loud!

Last night, watching the Stanley Cup final, all I could think of Was Johnson’s Baby Shampoo. “No more tears!”

What is with all this bawling from men we are seeing? Okay, maybe I can understand Ray Bourque getting a little misty. Twenty two years and he finally won the big one. Yeah, I can see some elation on his part. Maybe a sniffle or two.

But then there were the New Jersey Devils in their locker room after their loss. Almost everyone is blubbering & carrying on. What kind of Devils are these? Wussy ones apparently. There mustn’t be any fire & brimstone in the Devil’s domain these days. Just a box of Kleenex. It was like the Menopause Support Group’s trip to see Steel Magnolias! Give me a break!

Can you imagine Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge & Derek Sandersen losing a game, heading to the locker room and then having a good cry for themselves? Picture the post-game interview. Bob Wilson asking Terry O’Reilly what he thought.. “Oh Bob, I can’t talk right now. I’m just a big emotional mess!” Boo-hoo, boo-hooo!

It’s happening in our politics too. Remember Bill Clinton, the Crier & Chief. That phony bastard could well-up at the drop of a hat. And so many thought it was great. “Oh he’s so sensitive!” I don’t want my president to break down! I want him to be a stoic unfeeling rock, like Harry Truman.

What’s with this trend toward feminizing men & boys? Are we becoming a culture of androgynous beings with no discernible distinction between the genders with the exception of biological hardware? Isn’t it a corruption of nature’s balance for men to act feminine?

We throw Ritalin at our boys to quell their masculine traits, then they see their athletic heroes going to pieces when they lose a game. We’re medicating and socializing them to be less aggressive, more emotive. Many try to diminish the competitive nature of sports so everyone leaves the contest feeling good! We attempt to reduce their games to an exercise in collaboration rather than a contest of strength and skill. This is nuts.

With all this WWII nostalgia, can you imagine if we were confronted with the same challenges today or sometime in the future? Would we be ready to meet the enemy with guns blazing or would we roll over, tears in our eyes, and submit?

Sociologists would say that I am cleaving to “normative gender roles” and they would say it with a great deal of scorn and acrimony. But while my feelings will be hurt and with tears streaming down my cheeks I’ll only ask this. Have you ever met a bigger bunch of wimps then those men who are Sociologists?
