Naturally you have given me an entire new set of arguments in favor of the community preservation act. I've never given much thought to some of the "personal benefits" of open space. It is clear I need a new perspective!
Your observation is on target, I believe that any discussion related to the management of our town, difficulty in funding operational budgets like schools, public safety, public works and yes even senior services are connected. We have capital improvement project getting in line like a new library, new police station, new town hall, and waiting in the wings another new school.
All these things are near impossible because we have a 90% residential tax base. The answer? Limit the number of homes that can be added to this base (3900 more possible) by acquiring some of the land. Why now? Because the state is going to match our money 50-75%. If we pass this thing the way it is proposed we could have 3 million to spend over 5 years. Stay away from expensive frontage lots and you can preserve lots of our landscape.
Ask any selectman what he hears most about from residents, it will be that we need to slow down growth and preserve our rural character. All these things fit. This is our moment of truth. Oh, and before anyone else brings it up, I know I need to get a life. Thanks for another great post, Naturally.
Warren
