His response was too long to post as a response below, so I'm putting it here - and this is what he said: "There are only two basic stick grips that can be used. Matched grip or unmatched grip. I started out when I was 15 using the unmatched grip. If you are right handed, your left hand would cradle the stick using the middle finger for bounce. The right hand would use the thumb and the middle side of the index finger. This "unmatched" style is the tradtional method for single snare use or drum set (kit) use for jazz and big band drummers many years ago. It is still used by many drummers today. Some drummers are taught through regular leasons the unmatched (I was). My style of rock / jazz drumming (for me) is more suited to matched grip. Getting around a drum set is better using an identical grip (physics). If you are playing lightly, the unmatched left hand on the snare drum CAN give you a more delicate, precise ability to bounce the stick. But, if you are really going-after-it on a set of drums (in my opinion) a matched even grip is the ONLY way to go."
