This is so sad. To think of folks who love this place needing to leave and nobody stepping up to even try making things better. Newburgh is being replaced by big spenders who keep their money in their pockets and who only care about their own property line. Just beyond the hedge row lies an element that will eventually take them very far down and they don't see that. It's not gentrification. It's real isolationism and it won't work. It's been tried many times. But the way I see it a drastic change is needed at the very top. City planners who know what they're doing to get business back. A city manager who knows that money comes from tax payers who have jobs and that money needs to go back into the city not in somebody's purse. We need a council interested in the city not just a chair in city hall and some hokey title. We need a government that isn't blind. We need a government that doesn't pander to and buckle under the element that wants to be absentee slumlords. We need a population that cares about what's beyond their own garden gate. I know those folks are here. They just feel so defeated. But silence solves nothing. That's obvious. That's what got us to where we are now. It's not so hard to run for government here. It's not impossible to win. Throw your name in. Throw out apathy. We're small enough to manage. But 1 or 3 working alone doesn't solve anything. And sitting at home crying in your beer doesn't help either. Eventually everything around here will go the way of the Urban Renewal of the 60s. Remember that? Water St., Clinton St. and the waterfront. There's a new year a few weeks away. Resolution 1 for 2011 has to be to get up, get out, speak up, and stop the status quo. 2011 needs to be the year of action. If Beacon can save itself Newburgh can too! Don't you agree? We have a hole in the hull but we didn't hit an iceberg. Somebody just needs to kick the engines and get them running. We'll be in safe port in plenty of time.
