The contract that local pageants use is up on the Miss Yakima website. I remember there was discussion on the contract and for those who want to read it then download it from the Miss Yakima website.

A second generation Miss Tri-Cities was crowned Saturday evening.

Janae Calaway of Pasco was chosen over seven other contestants. Her mother, Beverly Beus Calaway, was named Miss Tri-Cities in 1982.

Janae Calaway said she was shocked, appreciative and excited for the honor.

"I'm excited to follow in her footsteps," she said. "I just feel grateful for the opportunity."

She will compete in next year's Miss Washington competition for a chance to go to the Miss America pageant.

In the question-and-answer portion of the contest, Calaway, 19, emphasized how she wants to work with the Children's Miracle Network, a partner of the Miss America program, to help provide support for kids with cancer, her chosen platform.

"My platform works on healing the heart," she said. "I just want to focus on bringing the children joy."

She was congratulated by 2012 Miss Tri-Cities Halle Goodwin. Goodwin performed a couple of dance numbers and gave a farewell video, detailing her year as Miss Tri-Cities.

Other performances came from recently crowned Miss Washington Reina Almon and Kristen Blair Guererro, a former Miss Tri-Cities and Miss Texas. Both of them sang for the audience that filled most of Kennewick High School's auditorium.

Calaway got the loudest applause when introduced for most of the competitions, including her jazz dance performance.

In the swimsuit competition, she was one of only two contestants to wear a one-piece; she chose to wear a white, backless suit.

She then wore a flowing black evening gown, topped with silver sequins.

She takes home an $11,000 scholarship and other prizes for winning the contest.

Calaway graduated from Chiawana High School and Columbia Basin College. She is now attending Brigham Young University with a communications major and a psychology minor.

Calaway works as a private dance instructor and helped organize a nonprofit dance showcase. She lists an interesting fact about herself as, "It is not uncommon to find me working in the muck with my 4-H steer."

First runner-up was Cheyenne Van Tine, 19, of Kennewick. Her platform is helping youth discover their brilliance. She attends CBC. Her parents are R.W. and Evan Van Tine.

Second runner-up was Logan McCoy, 19, of Richland, who had a platform of inspiring youth to be philanthropic. She also attends CBC. Her parents are Helen McCoy and Daniel McCoy.

On Friday, Reagan Rebstock, 14, of Kennewick, won the Miss Tri-Cities Outstanding Teen contest. She attends Horse Heaven Hills Middle School. Her parents are Wendy White and Andy Rebstock.

No surprise there. She was Miss Tri-Cities Outstanding Teen 2011, Miss Washington's Outstanding Teen 2012 and now Miss Tri-Cities 2013. Her mother has been working with the pageant for years so she has had a ton of experience. She was prepared and qualified. Cheyenne was Miss Tri-Cities Outstanding Teen 2008 and never won a state title but placed 1st runner up twice before moving on to the Miss WA Teen USA where she won. While she looked fantastic and she's a good singer the fact is that there was no way for her to win against Janae especially since Janae is a serious dancer who has won national awards with her dancing. Plus let's face it, when your family is taking up 1/2 the auditorium and screaming the loudest that's going to influence the judges.

It's the same with the Rebstock girl, her mother bought 50 seats for her dance studio (the same dance studio that Janae goes to and the same dance studio that danced at the show). The more people screaming and the louder the screams the more influence that's going to have on the judges.

While I'm sure we are all very proud of Reina and will support her on her venture to Atlantic City, let's all take a moment to appreciate the marvelous girls who have aged out and will not get the chance to represent their state at Miss America.

Shannon Tuohy - Miss Columbia Basin (4RU '07, 2RU '13)
Delia Lubanovici - Miss Seattle
Alicia Gonzales - Thurston County
Kelsey Schmidt - Eastside (3RU '13)

These are all fantastic young women who have done their friends, families, and communities proud!

Delia
Reina
Shannon
Catherine
Alicia (Clark)
Lacey
Hannah (Liberty)

My top 5:
Reina
Kenzi
Catherine
Shannon
Alicia (Clark)

Girls that could definitely sneak into tonight's 10:
Kailee Dunn
Kelsey Schmidt
Megan Leibold

Girls they could bump out:
Delia :(
Hannah (liberty)
Lacey :(

I've been saying it since May... Reina is my pick to take it. I really do think she is the most prepared and well-round contestant for September. She's not my favorite personality, but she might be the best choice this year.

First off, there are a handful of girls that I've never met, never seen, and don't know much about... Abrielle (Lewis), Hannah C (Spokane), Haley (Pierce), Halle (Tri-Cities), Erica (Whatcom), and Carissa (Yakima). If you have any wonderful things to share about these girls, let us know! Or anything that might hold them back from winning the crown (this year... most of them are "new").

My Top 10 (as of now):

Lauren- Grays Harbor
Delia- Seattle
Reina- Evergreen
Shannon- Columbia Basin
Catherine- Moses Lake

Kenzie- Tahoma
Alicia- Clark
Hannah- Liberty
Kelsey- Eastside
Lacey- East Cascade

I've never seen Alicia (Clark) compete and really know nothing about her. But she beat out some competition to win her pageant this year, so I think she may make top 10. She could EASILY be bumped out by Pierce, Auburn, or West Sound... and those are my Bubbles- Pierce, Auburn, West Sound.

I also don't know anything about Whatcom, but I love her already. I think she's adorable... she could sneak in there for sure.

PREDICTIONS for Prelim Awards:

Alpha SS-
Lauren or Shannon... I say Lauren

Beta SS-
Kelsey or Kailee... I say Kelsey

Alpha Talent-
Catherine. I will be shocked if it's anyone else... the only others that could come close are Lauren or Lacey.

Beta Talent-
Victoria or Megan. It will come down to song choice and presentation... and which style the judges like more, of course.

Alpha EG- Delia. Fantastic dress and won EG at Seattle for a reason. Best gown I've seen in years. Lauren will also be up there.

Beta EG- Reina.

Can't wait for this weekend!!!

If a girl is a current title holder in on format can she compete at a different level locally?

Say the girl is (and I'm using this as an example not as reality) Miss NY Outstanding Teen and let's say her state pageant is in June. Let's say her local MISS pageant is accepting girls for the MISS program in July but they close applications in May (before she gives up her state title). Is it fair for the local board to allow her to compete in July despite the fact she didn't go through the same application process as the other girls competing? She is after all a CURRENT yet OUTGOING title holder for two years. She can't participate in the photo shoot for contestants in May, she can't participate in the local events as a contestant before June when she gives up her crown so is it fair to the other contestants or is the local board setting it up for her to win?
