Subject: Brazilian election

Dear Editor,

I don’t understand why Brazilians living in the United States are participating in the election for Brazil. The only people who should be voting for the upcoming election are the citizens living in Brazil. This election is not going to directly affect the citizens of the U.S.A; it will only directly affect the citizens of Brazil.

One candidate who stuck out as a positive role was Heloisa Helena de Moares Carvalho. It seems like she would do a lot of good for Brazil. I think many people of Brazil thought Helena was apart of the corruption of the leftist party, but really she was trying to stop the corruption. Helena did not support things like raising the retirement age or cutting benefits for employees. When she created the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL), her focus was clearly on improving the lives of Brazilians. She wants to put young people in school, lower interest rates set by the Central Bank which would create more jobs for Brazilians, and increase land ownership.

I don’t know what to think of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. For a while he seems to be doing good until he’s caught in yet another scandal. Questions like ‘where does the money to support these scandals come from?’ and ‘why isn’t this money put to better use?’ come to my mind.

Silva also preaches he will help the poor, but the only thing he has done is give the poor $45 a month. This money probably does help a little, but what about the conditions the poor are living in. I wonder if Silva has seen with his own eyes the violence and corruption people living in poverty see everyday.
