Subject: Brazilian Elections

In this past weekend’s Brazilian elections, there were many candidates, but one seemed to stand out from the rest. The current president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is a member of the Workers Party and is running for reelection. Even amidst many scandals and criticisms, he still comes off as a man who is concerned and cares for the people of Brazil. This is apparent in his upbringing, being born to a peasant family, and also in his policy, by creating the Family Allowance program. This program gives impoverished families a chance to live by giving them money and food. Da Silva has also initiated policies to get clean water to impoverished areas in Brazil. The citizens of Brazil finally have a chance to be healthy and prosperous, and involved in their system of government.
I think it is amazing that voting is mandatory in Brazil. This assures that everyone is encouraged to have a say in their government, whether they are rich or poor. Also, the Worker’s Party has set up campaign offices in major cities of the United States. This makes it so even Brazilian citizens living outside the country can participate.
In a government, the people are what matter; the democracy is there to help them. The people do not blame da Silva for the scandals; they do not focus on negative campaigning. Lula da Silva is a strong candidate because he is about the people. Even though he did not get the fifty percent needed to win in this round of voting, he will most certainly be the president of Brazil for another four years.
