“Election Runoff for Lula” – Tom Philips in Rio de Janeiro

Dear Editor,

I wonder how it is to non-Brazilians to watch what happens here. Scandals just come and go, the last lighter than the following. People here just seem to be blind, deaf and, in the two senses, dumb. Exactly the same seems to happen, I must add, to our dear Mr. President, candidate to reelection. All the scandals around him, involving his direct assessors and he’s never aware of anything. “I didn’t see or hear anything, and I don’t know anything.” Alckmin is not a saint. But he’s got the benefit of the doubt. We cannot say for sure he’s a crap, but Lula, well… Lula is “the leftwing leader” who was leftwing just until he finally got elected. He’s now an IMF slave, corrupt, “mensalista” and “sanguessuga.” “PT, never again,” people say. It’s too much. As the governor of São Paulo, Alckmin did a nice job. Maybe he could be good for our country. Maybe it is asking too much (it’s about politics). The voters with the red noses in São Paulo are very expressive of my (and many others’) indignation. This is a circus, and the circus is on fire. Consequences will be disastrous (they already are). Anyway, we need some action. This is too pathetic to last longer.

Mariana Costa.
