Dear Editor,

The President’s comment (“My soul is burning”) on the results of last Sunday’s election is indeed
revolting. Brazilians have watched scandals after scandals throughout Mr. Lula’s government, which was once considered Brazil’s great hope for a change in the country’s political scene. Thus, it is not surprising that the president did not obtain the majority of votes he so desperately needed to avoid a runoff. Mr. Lula’s populist government was another corrupted one, and the fact that Brazilians see the taxes they pay being stolen by politicians instead of being spent on education, health and security makes their ”souls burn” with indignation. Whoever wins this election must work hard to put an end to Brazil’s worst problem, corruption.
