Elections-Brazil: The Threat From the Left
by Mario Osava

Dear editor,

I believe Heloisa Helena de Moares Carvalho has a very little chance of winning the Brazilian elections. She is up against two very strong opponents: Lula and Geraldo Alckmin. Other reasons for this statement include her platform style and positions. She has a very strong, sharp tongue. Part of her campaign includes bringing back the issues of the corruption in Lula's previous term as president. I believe this is not going to help her win the elections. The people of Brazil, mostly the poor who are a majority, have strong ties and admire Lula. Helosia won't get very far voicing her opionions to people who already admire Lula.
Ultimatly, Helosia and Lula are trying to obatain the same goal: to win the election through the poor. Both present tactics in which they plan to raise the standard of living in Brazil. Lula is already respected in the eyes of the poor. Also, Helosia was kicked out of the PT which is Lula's political party. Therefore, she is already viewed as lower of a political opponent against Lula.
Personally, I don't want Helosia to win. I also know I'm not in the same position as the Brazilian people, so I can't imagine what they want. But in my viewpoint she shouldn't win because she criticizes capitalism which the United States holds as it's economic position. Also, she supports Hugo Chavez's Bolvarian Revolution. He is very much against United States policies.
All in all, I believe the Brazilian people won't vote for her because she is not a strong leader.

Sincerely,

Ben Wasinski
