Subject: Brazilian Elections

In regards to the article posted in the International Herald Tribune.

While reading this article, I thought it to be disconcerting that, even with all of the scandal and unrest surrounding Silva’s campaign, he continues to be so popular among the Brazilian population. After Silva’s party was accused of buying incriminating information about his opponents and Brazil’s electoral court is investigating suspicious activities within the party he is still backed by the majority of the population?
After much contemplation, I realized that the support of Silva’s tainted campaign is really not so odd. When reflecting upon recent American events, I came to the conclusion that the majority of the population is allowing themselves to be led blindfolded. When President Bill Clinton was impeached for lying under oath regarding a scandal during his presidency, the opinion of the people did not change. His evident dishonesty with the American public was ignored. The public sees only what they would like to see and appear to disregard the dishonest and illegal circumstances surrounding their leader.
As I am concerned for this apparent lack of interest in the scandal surrounding Silva’s campaign, it must be taken into account that he has not been proven to be guilty of these accusations. It only seems that the Brazilian public should take into account that some truth must lie in these allegations. If Silva himself is not guilty of these crimes, it is likely that his subordinates are. He must be held responsible for the actions of those representing him. Silva should be continuously aware of actions taken in his behalf.
