Subject: Brazilian Elections

Dear editor,

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva seems to have dodged the blame for the September scandal, but that is probably a good thing for Brazil. I do not know the entire history of Lula’s presidency, but from what I have read, it seems he has done more for the country in the past four years than anyone has before him (edition.ccn.com). His Family Allowance programs helps 11 millions families a month, he has driven inflation down from 13% to 3.9% in just his one term, and he has strengthened the Real by 39%, compared to the U.S dollar (iht.com). I do not know much about his opponent, the democrat Geraldo, Alckmin, but Lula has made great progress. He has focused mainly on his supporters residing in southern Brazil, but with their votes, he is sure to have majority. Although it is not right to focus on only half of a nation, he is very smart for doing so. With most of the support in the south, it seems he is almost guaranteed to be re-elected. It is not as if his whole campaign is geared only to get himself re-elected though. If he wins, hopefully he will continue his great success in helping the poor, but also address the whole population. He has accomplished a lot in just four years, and despite the scandals and the negative politics that he may have taken part in, he deserves more time to complete his goals for the country of Brazil.

Sincerely,
Steve Tharrett
