Subject: Brazilian Elections

Dear Editor,
When I began to read the articles about the Brazilian elections I thought they where going to be very different from the American elections, but to my surprise they were not that different. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is linked to many scandals and corruption, similarly to our President George Bush. It is also said that Lula and his administration bought information on other candidates to hurt them and cause them to look bad in the public eye, and maybe take the focus off Lula’s own scandals. In the United States, political figures are always trying to get hidden information on their competing candidates or investing money in themselves to try and gain voters. In the time span between October 1999 and March of 2000, the FEC (federal Election Commission) has accounted President George Bush for spending 21.7 million dollars on “media expenses”. According to Geraldo Alckmin Lula’s party has spent 1.7 million reals ($781,000 American), to purchase a dossier that his party could use against Lula’s opponent, and nobody really knows where the money has come from. Personally, I would rather have money spent on building up America’s economy including healthcare plans, environmental issues, increasing educational spending, or paying off our increasing national debt. Maybe Brazilian citizens would also rather see money go into the country, instead of politicians squandering the money on their public image. It makes you wonder what the candidates think is more important, working to make the country look better, or wanting themselves to look better.
