Subject: Brazilian Elections

Dear Editor,

It seems as though President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has been doing a pretty good job throughout his term in office. Although corruption scandals have plagued his term and all of Brazil, the country seems to be headed in the right direction. Whatever can be done to help the people of a country, I believe, therefore must be done. Even though da Silva’s time in office may show a few illegal activities, the people are accepting and forgiving him, or else why would polls show him having fifty percent of the vote? It’s a belief of mine that the work da Silva has done has been well, and it’s the cause for billions of dollars in debt payoff as well as an increase of spending on social programs without raising taxes. Brazil has a few things to show for this, which include a gradually growing economy and increasing foreign investment. It’s stated “Brazil's benchmark Bovespa stock index is up 220 percent since Silva took office, shooting past 40,000 points earlier this year.” On top of this, the currency of Brazil, the real, strengthened thirty-nine percent against the USD since the current president took office. This is proof of the positive work da Silva is doing for his country. If the presidency were to change hands at such a crucial point in time for Brazil, it seems as though much could be lost. Da Silva knows what he and his party are doing, and so far, it’s the right thing for the country.
