Subject: Friend Dying of Cancer

"Friend Dying of Cancer?"
Question:

My friend is dying of cancer. Today they gave him 72 hours. i don't know how to deal with it. All i can do is sit here and cry, i can't sleep, can't eat, can't study. In school, all i do is sit there and zone. How do you prepare yourself to have a close friend die? How am I supposed to deal with things after he's died? i don't know what to do. i would appreciate any and all advice. Thanks,
Female, Age 16

Answer:

I saw your question and that really touched me. I have never been through a situation like this but I tried to put myself in your shoes. Conclusion was: it would not be easy. However, I tried to imagine what I would do. And I thought: 72 hours… Compared to a lifetime, it is nothing… However, in 72 hours, 3 whole days, you can make a difference, if time is used well. Therefore, cut classes during these days (talk to your teachers, explain the situation, even show them a note from your mom, if possible); you aren’t concentrating anyway, and spend these 3 days with your friend. If he/she can leave the hospital, take him/her to your favorite places, the places you have always loved going to. If the doctors allow you to, eat all the ice cream, candies, pizza and all the food you too loved eating together. Rent all the movies you two always loved watching together. And, if possible, try to make one of your friend’s dearest wishes come true. Suppose it is a trip to an exotic place: “take” this place to your friend, with pictures, typical food and music, anything!
The most important thing now is: make you friend the happiest person on Earth!!! J
Good luck,
