Subject: Friend Moving Away and Making New Friends

Question:

Today my best friend left to go back to AZ and I won't see her for at least 6 more months. I feel so alone and don't know how to get this awful solitude away. She has always been there and I don't know who to trust anymore because everytime I believe in a friendship it disappears. What do I do about this?

Female 15 yr old

Answer:

It's sad when a close friend moves away. My best friend and I just started college, but we are going to different schools. I was worried about our relationship staying strong, but I realized that it is really easy to stay in touch. I frequently use my cell phone and email. I also use the website www.facebook.com where you can add people as friends to share pictures, talk, and joke around. My best friend and I don't get to actually hang out often, but the important part of the friendship, talking about life and the things that bother us, is still able to continue. We both make the effort to visit each other once in a while. I would recommend asking your parents if you can visit your friend in Arizona and maybe she could do the same. That way you will not have to wait six months to see her next.

It is hard to find new friends, but it will happen. As you go through elementary school, middle school, high school, and eventually college, you get a new set of friends because your environment changes. That is perfectly normal. You're just starting high school so you are just beginning to find your friends. Give yourself a little time before you begin to feel hopeless. Join an organization that seems interesting to you and really getting involved with it. You will get to know people that have similar interests and make many more friends.

Good Luck!
