A Fonética e a Fonologia Aplicadas ao Ensino de Língua Estrangeira: o caso das Vogais Altas Frontais e do Glide /j / no Inglês e no Português Brasileiro

Empregando-se um experimento com participação de 16 informantes, divididos em dois grupos, sendo um para teste e um outro controle, analisou-se a aquisição de pronúncia das vogais altas frontais e do glide /j/. Investigou-se a relevância da língua materna, no caso, o português brasileiro, para a aquisição de uma língua estrangeira, neste estudo, a língua inglesa. A partir da hipótese da conscientização dos aprendizes quanto aos parâmetros fonéticos e fonológicos, tanto da língua materna quanto da língua-alvo, buscou-se comprovar a importância da fonética e da fonologia para a aquisição de pronúncia do inglês como língua estrangeira. As vogais altas foram escolhidas, primeiramente, por figurarem em ambas as línguas, embora de maneiras distintas e, também, pela literatura postular a importância da distinção dos sons vocálicos para estabelecer uma comunicação inteligível. Este projeto examinou, ainda, o valor da instrução formal para a aquisição de habilidades de pronúncia, com o intuito de promover um aprendizado mais dinâmico e eficaz, bem como estimular a autonomia do aprendiz. Os dados obtidos apontam para a necessidade de um ensino diferenciado, a partir da conscientização dos aprendizes quanto ao detalhe fonético, ao sistema sonoro da língua materna e àquele da língua-alvo, traçando-se um ensino particularizado e não globalizante.


Phonetics and Phonology Applied to Foreign Language Teaching: the case of the high front vowels and the glide /j/ in English and in Brazilian Portuguese

This work investigates the acquisition of English high front vowels and the glide /j/ by Brazilian students of English. It aims to investigate the relevance of the mother tongue, Brazilian Portuguese, in the process of learning a foreign language - in this case English. From The hypothesis of awareness raising regarding the phonetic and phonological parameters of both languages, was tested for the acquisition of English as a foreign language. The experiment was performed with the help of 16 respondents, divided in a testing group and in a control group. The choice for high front vowels was made because although they occur in both languages, they are used in different ways, and also, because the literature postulates the importance of distinguishing vocalic sounds to establish intelligible conversation. This project also examines the value of formal instruction for the acquisition of pronunciation abilities, with the purpose of promoting more dynamic and effective learning, as well as encouraging learner’s autonomy. The data obtained point towards the need for student-oriented teaching, based on the learner’s awareness of phonetic detail, the sound system of the mother tongue and foreign language, thus supporting a non-generalizing teaching styles.
