Sue is absolutely correct! Tourism is way down. Though I enjoy the peacefullness of the island without the crowds, the economy is suffering drastically. I know island residents who have put their businesses up for sale and they are not only the restaurant owners. The word around town is that the island will come back when the bridge is finished, but in the meantime people are going to other places and have found that there are great vacation spots elsewhere.
I love Sanibel and would not trade it for any place else. But the fact of the matter is, my rental cottage is vacant for all of February and March, an all time first!
