I was kind of curious how people would respond to this post and I find it interesting that it hasn't received many replies. In my opinion, the island is very different if you knew it pre-Charley. It isn't bad - just different. The beaches and the shelling are the same. The beautiful warm sunshine is the same. A few parts of the island still have the lush vegitation that we all loved about Sanibel and Captiva but most of it is gone. Perriwinkle way is completely different without the Australian pines. After Charley I heard a lot about revitalizing it, new plantings, a new look but nothing has happened. The island seems much more open as it is no longer covered by a canopy. The Ding Darling Refuge areas look very different. The hurricane hit hard there. One can still see wildlife but the area is nothing like it was. Captiva is wide open now and no longer that neat jungle you used to drive through. Most of the wonderful restaurants are still in business providing that fabulous food we all love! Most accomdations are better than ever because they were completely updated after Charley.
