Lightning Whelks were everywhere! I found a few half buried and I thought that they were occupied but you just have to check, I would cover them up with sand so no one would be tempted to take them. I didn't do any surf shelling but was fortunate to find a lot of shells on all parts of the beach. Your mom was very lucky to find a Cabrit's Murex. We stopped at Venice Beach for my grandson to look for sharks teeth, red algae was still bad there on Sat. before Thanksgiving. You mentioned you were from Seattle, we spent our summer vacation there in July. Washington is a beautiful state and my grandson loved all of the falls.
