Subject: I know I am getting get heat for this

We have been coming to southwest Florida for years. Then in 2003, Charlie hit. Not only was the island devastated but we where too. The home we had rented on Captiva was actually destroyed and we where forced to make plans elsewhere on another island that was not hit by the hurricane.
Every time we try now to go back to Captiva (our first choice always) we are disappointed to find out that the prices keep getting higher and higher or the homes that are within reach seem to have less and less in terms of amenities.
It has been 5 years and we have not been able to stay back on the island. We rent on the other island, enjoy a private home on the water, private pool, great amenities, sunsets, restaurants, parks for our children and for thousands (yes thousands) of dollars less for weeks in April and October.
We still take a daily trip back to Captiva and Sanibel and hit our favorite beach spots and restaurants. We visit Jerry's. Watch the manatee at Jensen’s. Walk around the light house.
BUT WHY are the prices soooooooooooooooo high for rentals. A home we had once rented for 2500 for the week is now 8000! The pool screen has been removed. The downstairs wet bar and amenities removed. The bathroom closed. The pool area seating taken away. I know you all know that its not just happened at this one house. I have seen the pictures of homes we have rented previously and noticed their changes as well.
They have to come down. I see so many houses that sit empty (I check all the rental agencies) and condos with vacancies. We have even done a walk through with the rental agent on a home we had inquired about but the price was too high. We got to the island, stopped in and asked if the home was rented, was told no, we did the walk through and was asked if we wanted to rent it the following year and the price was even higher! Would it not be better to have people in for lower prices than no one at all?
We miss the island and after years and years of vacations there we have now been forced out.

Its such a shame.
