There is a disease called thalassemia. People with the disease do not produce enough hemoglobin. They can probably benefit from drinking blood, and I believe there are recorded cases of people doing so. There have also been cases of people drinking blood for whatever reason. The Blood Countess drank blood, because she thought it would keep her young. Vlad the impaler liked to impale his victims and then take some of the blood for dipping bread. Maybe they had thalassemia and craved blood for the hemoglobin.
