I don't know about 'thalassemia' but there is a disease called 'porphyria' or 'porphyrias' that causes 'vampire-like' symptoms.

Porphyrins are part of the heme group of molecules found in hemoglobin. Heme contains iron. Oxygen attaches itself readily to iron. Hence, IT'S IMPORTANT! Hehe. But this disease, it produces TOO MUCH porphyrins and in turn slows down the production of heme. Unfortunately, porphyrins also react to light. So a person with a high amount of porphyrins in their body would be extremely sensitive to sunlight, and excess exposure would cause their skin to break up and their gums to literally recede from their teeth.

The remedy in the 'olden days'? Stay out of the Sun and drink lots of blood! Look it up!
