Enjoy the Sun's transit through Sagittarius! ** Astrolesson: The Houses and Their Rulers When you examine a birth chart, one of the first things you notice is how the planets are distributed throughout the houses. Some charts have heavily occupied houses along with a number of houses that are empty. Does this mean the houses with occupants are more important areas of life? And if there are no planets in a house, does it mean that particular area is unimportant? With eight planets -- plus the Sun and Moon and twelve houses for them to occupy -- everybody has unoccupied houses in their birth chart! It's true that an abundance of planets in one house draws attention to the area of life represented by that house, just as the eye automatically goes to that house when examining the horoscope. For example, if four planets are in the career and public identity tenth house, the person is likely to want to make his or her mark on the world and will naturally gravitate toward positions of leadership. But if the tenth house is vacant, it doesn't mean that person is uninterested in having a fulfilling career; rather, it simply indicates that one must look to the ruler of the house. In this tenth house example, the ruler is the planet that rules the sign on the tenth house cusp. If Virgo is on the tenth house cusp, the ruler is Mercury -- the planet that belongs to Virgo. For instance, if Mercury is located in the seventh house, the person may be naturally drawn to counseling, since the seventh house is the relationship house. Think of the ruler as the landlord of the house. Whether houses are occupied or not, remember to find the ruler for more information on the matters of the house.
