Date Posted: 16:33:38 10/22/07 Mon Samhain, the second oldest holiday which is currently over 6,000 years old. This sabbat is also known as: Halloween, All Hallows Eve, Hallowmass, Ancestor Night, Feast of the Dead, Old Hallowmas, as well as many other names. In tradition this sabbat is celebrated when the Sun is at 15 degrees Scorpio which is usually Nov.7. This year the Sun will be at 15 degree Scorpio Nov. 7 at 1:12 p.m. Yet others celebrate this sabbat on Halloween or on the full Moon in October, which this year is Oct. 26. Samhain marks the beginning of the Celtic New Year and today many Celtic Pagans observe Samhain as the renewal of the Wheel of the Year. For Pagans this is the night that the old God dies, returning to the land of the dead to await rebirth at Yule, and a time when the Crone Goddess would go into mourning for her lost consort, leaving her people in temporary darkness. Celtic Pagans believe that the veil between the world of the living and that of the dead is at its thinnest on this night, and the spirits of our loved ones walk the Earth visiting family and friends as well as joining in the ritual celebrations. This is why its been said that Samhain is the prime time for any type of spirit contact rituals. The feeding of the dead is a widespread practice, even today in modern Celtic Lands. In Scotland,Ireland, and other places food is always left out for these spirit travelers and candles are placed in windows to guide them a long their way, hence these were the origins of the modern Halloween customs of the Jack O' lantern and trick-or-treat. This is my favorite time of year. And yes, to this day I still love to carve pumpkins and bake the seeds from what is now my piece of art. This is the time to think about next year and what I want to happen or change. This is why the primary focus of this sabbat is all about transforamtion, divination, regeneration, honoring loved ones that have crossed over, honoring the harvest(since this is the third and final harvest of season) and preparing for the Winter season that awaits us. This is a great sabbat for the entire family to get involved with. A huge supper is made for the sabbat along with some goodies, pumkins can be picked at the pumpkin patches, then pumpkins can be craved and or decorated any way ones wants too, make homemade brooms, make center pieces and wreaths for doors, apple cider with cinnamon can be made to shake off the cold, costumes can be made or bought if one chooses to wear one, games are played-most famous is the apple dunking, ghost in the grave yard, dancing, playing tricks on one another and eating treats until bellies get upset, lighting the bonfire and the ritual begins. Cauldron, Jack O' Lantern, Balefire, Mask, besom/broom, the color orange and black are all symbolic to Samhain. Herbs and items used for Samhain are: oak leaves, acorns, apples, pumpkins, straw, sage, heather, mullein, and patchouli. Have a great & safe Samhain & enjoy the trick or treating of the season!
