Hi Ellen,
It's crazy how similar your situation was to mine! I guess if you can learn anything from mine it's that you can't assume they won't bring it up. Both of my parents used to smoke, but my mom quit when she was pregnant with me, but my dad never could quit, so he smoked outside the house. When I was 16 we had moved to a new city, and the friends I made were smokers, and I started smoking. I also smoked outside, and I guess the neighbours saw me. Well, they were talking with my parents one day a few months after I started smoking, and apparently they asked "So how long has Cassy been smoking?" My parents were furious. They tried grounding off and on for almost a year, but I kept smoking, and eventually they just gave up.
Honestly, I wish I quit when they were trying to get me to. I'm 19 now and addicted to 2 packs a day. I've tried to cut down, but it's too hard. Sure, for a while I enjoyed it, but with all these smoking bans, it's really hard to be a smoker. And don't think that it can't happen to you... I found it just kinda crept up on me... and now, not only is it inconvenient, my health is taking a toll too.
I am a firm believer in "to each their own" though, so my advice to you is that if you want to smoke, tell your parents. Although I hate to say it, they really do have wisdom beyond our years.
