Well it's been quite a tough time. You wouldn't BELIEVE how much agro it is to rent a house in the UK at the moment! They check into every corner of your life. I'm surprised they didn't ask for blood tests.

Even though we know our new landlady and she was happy to go ahead, it's taken a month of solid slog to be anywhere near sorting it out and we had problems with spouse having had a failed business, had to get a guarantor and then they had to check into every area of his life - even speak to HIS employer. Then we still had problems because his current work is part of the Cornish economy (i.e. you get money where you can and don't always keep records of it).

On two occasions over christmas we thought we would not be able to rent the place - and what was worse was that we wouldn't be able to rent ANY place if we couldn't have this one, because the same rules apply with every agency and every house. We thought we were going to be homeless even though we had the deposit, the rent, a guarantor and evidence of 14 years of regular rent payments behind us.

No bloody wonder there are so many homeless people. My best friend sold her house and had £50,000 in her account and was then told she couldn't rent a property because her salary was too low by their measurements (they multiply the annual rent by 2.5 and your salary has to be more than this amount). Then she couldn't get a regular mortgage for the same reasons. She was about to be homeless with her four children even though she had loads of money in the bank and a regular job. She had to solve it by getting one of those self-certificating completely dodgy and unsafe mortgages on a very shitty flat.

This country is a bloody disgrace. It has made me so angry and emotionally exhausted. Anyone fancy a revolution?
