Thats their problem! You got what you deserved. He/she was being stingy and you just reminded them that there was a 1 grade for a reason.
To not give someone a 1 because they only said something rather than wrote it would be ludicrous.

Time to go have a chat with the principle about more money, extra increments to recognise your work etc.
After all, it is because of you that the report of the college will be improved. You slogged your guts out, whilst no doubt some others work half the amount you do, its only fair. They chose not to bust a gut, you did.
