• Where are you having the party? If it's at a venue -- restaurant, pub, hall, etc. -- people may be more inclined to pay than if you're hosting it as a private home. If you're having it at an outside venue and plan to have alcohol available, I'd definitely charge for that. Generally, book launches are free, but then you don't have the resources that a publishing house does. It's a tough one! (NT) -- Carla, 15:13:31 04/15/12 Sun

    • I was just thinking like at an open house (to sell a house) the realtor pays for the food and alcohol for the open house. Regardless, of how much food is being offered.           • Don't apologize, I think I wasn't very clear up above about where it was, etc. If I had a bigger house, or I didn't think people would get eaten alive by mosquitoes I'd probably just have it in my back yard. We've had parties with fifty people there and it barely made a dent. • You are at Begbie's still? Sorry if I get the name wrong. I think in that case, you could charge a small fee. Yes, you could charge for alcohol but if no one or only a few drink in order not to pay then you will still be footing the bill for the free food. I think people I haven't been to a launch so not sure so if Carla is accurate that the food is free there might be an expectation for that and then all they have to domes avoid the alcohol so it's all free for them. Not saying people will do this but I've seen it in other circumstances. The girls are right, it's a tough call so you will have to go with what you are comfortable with.   • It's a public venue- a local pub that's got a really nice atmosphere. I have to pay to have the venue for the night, pay for the food etc. Outside food other than a cake cannot be brought in.     • Is the Pub charging you for the venue and the food?? Generally, when you host an event at a pub/restaurant and you have food pre-ordered there isn't also a separate charge for the space. For instance, our Home & School hosts a Pub night as a fundraiser at a local pub, which includes a buffet of finger foods. The pub charges a flat fee for the buffet but not a fee for the space. • Could you do something like charge $15 at the door, and $5 of that would go towards the purchase of the book? I don't know how much that would affect your overall cost and income, but maybe you could make up little bookmarks that would be their receipt as they picked up the books at the end of the evening. • Cindy - Have you considered looking for a sponsor? Maybe a local independent bookstore? Or some other group that would benefit from getting some publicity and could foot some of the bill.
