Subject: Hi Linda, sorry I took so long to see this. 1). The hardest loss for me as a writer was Lawrence. I went through a lot of tissue writing that scene with Pamela lying beside him. He's probably the one that I hear about most from readers, they really wish I would have left him alive. David was tough too, because I wrote Part 11 last, the rest of the book was done and had gone off to my editors to get that process started. I'm pretty sure I put it off deliberately. I had a good cry while writing the scene with him in the tower room. I have a few readers who took that really hard, well maybe more than a few but I only heard about it from a few. :) I'll take the rest of my response inside>>>
In reply to: Linda 's message, "Newbie here bothering you again. I have just finished reading the three books again and am struck by how you write the deaths of characters in such a real angst fashion. The chapter about Maude was so sad. It was gut wrenching to lose Sylvie and Lawrence. However, for me, the most tragic loss was David. He was, in a way, so pure and so believing in his cause. (Well, at least we last saw him on his knees in the execution position so I am assuming he was executed????). Was one character more difficult for you to write related to their demise than another? Have other readers expressed to you the death they found most difficult to read? Hate to bother you but after the second read, I think I have more thoughts/questions than after the first read. Simply a magnificant series and I thank you for it." on 17:05:23 04/28/14 Mon

One of my editors had a terrible time with David's death. I think she read everything three times through and she said she cried every time she came to that scene. She was hoping she said that somehow he had escaped, but looking forward I didn't see him anymore and I knew he was gone. If he somehow Houdini'ed his way out of things, it would have cheapened the sacrifice he made. His love for Pat was really quite pure, and I understood he really wouldn't have huge qualms about exchanging his life for Pat's.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the books again so soon. As I tell my readers, I really do write these books so that they can be re-read, so it's nice for me to hear they bear up on subsequent reads for people. Again, my apologies for not getting over here sooner, there's usually no traffic here anymore so I don't think to check in all that often.

  • BTW, I just thought I would add not to hesitate with questions, I don't mind answering them in the least. (NT) -- cg, 15:41:44 05/01/14 Thu
  • Thank you so much for your reply! I do think the first word that will always come to mind for me regarding David will be "pure." And you are so right, for him to reappear would cheapen the ultimate sacrifice that he made for Pat. Can't wait for your next book. We have to find out our where our Casey boy is.
