In reply to: Hogarth 's message, "What do you think about Letterman's sexual joke about Sarah Palin's daughter?" on 08:39:27 06/11/09 Thu

I DO NOT condone jokes aimed at underage girls. I admitted it was a tasteless so-called joke. I was simply confused about what I "must" understand. I didn't know if I must know that misogyny is wrong, that the left is afraid of Palin, etc.

I don't agree with the current trend in "comedy" that tries to get laughs in the most shocking way possible. I don't find many of the comics of today funny in the least. I long for Bill Cosby and Johnny Carson! But that is a risk that comes with freedom of speech. Did I like the jokes? No. But I do still think it would have fizzled away if such a big stink wasn't made over it.

I highly doubt that Letterman or the writers looked into the visit with enough detail to know which of her children came along. I also assumed the comment referred to Bristol. Was the joke in poor taste? Yes, 100%. Stupid and tacky and not remotely funny. But I also don't think it is appropriate to say that he was making a joke out of the rape of a 14 year old.

Around here the big late night issue is Conan's comment about Obama's visit to Green Bay. He said that Obama was here Tuesday and that Green Bay residents were shocked because half of them had never seen a black person before and the other half had never seen a skinny person before. Once again- tacky. And inaccurate in that he hadn't even visited Green Bay yet (his visit was yesterday).
Clearly the writers heard of a possible visit to Green Bay and came up with a red-neck joke. In the palin case- the writers heard of her attendance at the game and came up with a quick pregnant daughter joke.
