Subject: What do you think about Letterman's sexual joke about Sarah Palin's daughter?

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2009/06/10/2009-06-10_sarah_palin_attacks_david_letterman_over_sexuallyperverted_joke_on_late_night.html

It disgusts me that they think they can behave like this simply because she's a Republican. Would he have made this "joke", or any "joke at all" about one of Obama's daughters? Nope. I bet David Letterman would be very upset if someone made an off color comments about his child.

Problem is, he like many other so-called comedians has grown lazy during the 8 year utopia of simple and easy Bush jokes. They don't know where to turn now. If they had any courage at all, Obama and Biden provide a rich vein of comic material - they simply don't have the balls to mine it.

if Rush Limbaugh had made the exact same comment about one of the Obama girls. The outrage would be front page news.

She is right. He is a 60 year old man making jokes about the rape of a 14 year old girl. Disgusting. If it was 10 years ago and the joke had been about Chelsea Clinton he would be gone by now.

I think Sarah's response was excellent.... and Letterman DID NOT apoligize. I hope he gets what he deserves. Cancel his ass and let him fade to oblivion. Unfortunately, he will get probably higher ratings because of the double standard that the left has regarding the Palin's. The fact that some people are sitting at home enjoying his brand of humor is very sad.

Sarah's response to the non-apology this morning is perfect. To paraphrase: She will not give Letterman the ratings boost that would happen were she to appear and also feels it would be best to keep her daughter as far away from him as possible.

[> [> Each side does their fair share of "joking" -- Carrie, 15:04:46 06/15/09 Mon [1]

Regardless of whether you think he was talking about the 14 year old or the 18 year old, I think everyone is in agreement that the "joke" was inappropriate and not funny. Republicans also say stupid things that are meant to be a joke but aren't funny by any stretch of the imagination. For example (I can't remember how to post a link, so cut and paste if it isn't):

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2009/06/14/2009-06-14_pol_gorilla_is_related_to_first_lady.html

I don't understand how people are trying to turn this into a political issue. As far as I know, David Letterman isn't a spokesperson for the Democratic Party. While I believe he most definitely has a liberal slant to most things political, he shouldn't be in the same category as Rush Limbaugh or any other political commentator; he doesn't appear at political conventions or speak for the Democratic party at large like Rush does. He's a comedian. He tries to make people laugh and sometimes he steps in a huge, steaming pile.

I can see where Letterman has a point. Like most people, when I heard about the joke, I immediately thought of Bristol. I had forgotten that Sarah Palin had a 14-year-old daughter. Yeah, their writers should have been a little more vigilant about getting the facts straight. But, IMHO, if you think that David Letterman's joke actually condones statutory rape and, therefore all liberals/democrats must also condone it, you're up in the night.

[> Oh, please! -- DizzyDeb, 14:00:38 06/11/09 Thu [1]

This is old already! He didn't joke about rape. And he wasn't talking about the 14-year-old. Ms. Palin enjoyed every word of it because it keeps her in the national spotlight a little (please, just a little!) longer. I frankly found the comments from the article you posted to be much more entertaining.

Was it a bit tasteless? I guess you could say that, but unfortunately, that's the way "comedy" is nowadays. If you're in the public spotlight, you're fair game. And you've got to admit the Palin family was ripe for the picking.

[> [> Sorry Deb, you are wrong --- this is far beyond tasteless and in no way comedy -- Jeannine, 17:52:44 06/11/09 Thu [1]

do you think the reaction would be the same if it were the Obama girls that were joked about? When did he say it was Bristol? She was with her 14 year old. Any sex with her would be rape. You honestly think she (Sarah) invites this???? Why is she ripe for this? Because she had the audacity to run for office?

Misogyny is wrong, even when it is against people that you disagree with. The left is so obsessed with Sarah Palin that they must be very afraid.

You are a reasonable woman, Deb. You MUST understand this!

[> [> [> Yanno, I am so tired of people speculating about reactions -- DizzyDeb, 06:16:06 06/12/09 Fri [1]

if something were said about the President's daughters. Since it did not happen, it's silly to say how anyone would react. I certainly do not condone jokes aimed at underage girls. Nor do I assume that Letterman is a misogynist. I've not seen the evidence of this. It's another tempest in a teapot.

Is "the left" afraid of Sarah Palin? I would sincerely doubt it. There is not enough to her to be afraid of. Do I think she is using this "outrage" to stay in the spotlight? Yup. She got brushed aside as a speaker at the convention in NYC, but this episode gave her the cameras for longer than any speech would have gotten her.

I am not saying that Sarah Palin is ripe for anything other than a lot of attention simply because she was thrust into the public eye. And her family is not exactly boring.

I don't know what I "MUST" understand. I also don't think I'm wrong just because I had a different opinion and outlook on this molehill. What Palin did was get Letterman more ratings to see if this thing would escalate and continue. But she has also gained attention to ensure that she will stay in the news. It would have died quickly as just another tasteless, unfortunate attempt at humor, if she had done what so many other "celebrities" do when they are the target of a bad joke. Be classier than the "comic" and ignore it.

every situation is unique. I saw David, and I KNEW which daughter he was referring to ... I think it is safe to say any of his regular viewers did, as well. Clearly Letterman did NOT mean to say that about the younger daughter, so I think he's being unfairly treated...ESPECIALLY since he publicly, and abjectly apologized for any false impression he might have inadvertently created that he could have meant any daughter other than the 18 year old...Who, as a young mother, is ready to take on the public scrutiny, since the Palin's opened their lives to the 'public'. Isn't that part of celebrity? Taking on the glare of the spotlight on your private life is part of 'giving back to the fans.

If those comments had referred to a child of 14, that is crude calous, and sick...and that's exactly what Letterman said. He followed that with, 'anyone who has watched me over the years knows...that just isn't me.

I totally agree. It's not a part of Letterman's character, and I'm certain it didn't cross his mind anyone would think he was referring to any other than the "baby mama", daughter.

[> sarah is ripe because she let herself -- jayjay, 20:09:19 06/11/09 Thu [1]

become a tool.

she could have turned McCain down when he twinkled white house dust in her eyes.

she could have said no thank you, i'm happy here in alaska with my growing family.

but she said ok let's bring it on.

let's bring it on sarah.

i was watching david *live* the other night, and i heard the *jokes* and i groaned like the rest of the audience. until it hurt and you had to just laugh. since i hadn't watched the Palin's family movements in NYC, i assumed he was talkin about Bristol. like the rest of amerika.

i thought it was a brave, tho hypocritical move, and i applaud him. gotta steal the ratings from Conan somehow.

[> NOW's release on the subject..... an organization that some respect much more then Sarah Palin -- Jeannine, 09:41:40 06/12/09 Fri [1]

"Comedians in search of a laugh should really know better than to snicker about men having sex with teenage girls (or young women) less than half their age.

The sexualization of girls and women in the media is reaching new lows these days -- it is exploitative and has a negative effect on how all women and girls are perceived and how they view themselves. Letterman also joked about what he called Palin's "slutty flight attendant look" -- yet another example of how the media love to focus on a woman politician's appearance, especially as it relates to her sexual appeal to men. Someone of Letterman's stature, who appears on what used to be known as "the Tiffany Network" (CBS), should be above wallowing in the juvenile, sexist mud that other comedians and broadcasters seem to prefer."

If you don't understand how he is wrong, I am sorry for you.

And JayJay - I don't live in amerika. Not yet.

you don't even realize it. ya got a gun in yer house? well ya better. you're neck deep in amerika over there at yer house in texas.

C'MON. IT'S A JOKE PEOPLE! come to think about it, she does look like a slutty flight attendent. AND I'M THE GRANDDAUGHTER OF A SUFFRAGETTE! lol.... NOBODY has crusaded more for women's rights and sexual equality than ME!

i hadn't even noticed that about Sarah until David pointed it out... lol.... bye buh bye.

Chelsea got her fair share of ugly jokes, remember.....

[> As I said earlier.... -- DizzyDeb, 11:31:38 06/12/09 Fri [1]

I DO NOT condone jokes aimed at underage girls. I admitted it was a tasteless so-called joke. I was simply confused about what I "must" understand. I didn't know if I must know that misogyny is wrong, that the left is afraid of Palin, etc.

I don't agree with the current trend in "comedy" that tries to get laughs in the most shocking way possible. I don't find many of the comics of today funny in the least. I long for Bill Cosby and Johnny Carson! But that is a risk that comes with freedom of speech. Did I like the jokes? No. But I do still think it would have fizzled away if such a big stink wasn't made over it.

[> I think it is being blown out of proportion AND I think it was stupid and tasteless. -- niki, 11:43:04 06/12/09 Fri [1]

I highly doubt that Letterman or the writers looked into the visit with enough detail to know which of her children came along. I also assumed the comment referred to Bristol. Was the joke in poor taste? Yes, 100%. Stupid and tacky and not remotely funny. But I also don't think it is appropriate to say that he was making a joke out of the rape of a 14 year old.

Around here the big late night issue is Conan's comment about Obama's visit to Green Bay. He said that Obama was here Tuesday and that Green Bay residents were shocked because half of them had never seen a black person before and the other half had never seen a skinny person before. Once again- tacky. And inaccurate in that he hadn't even visited Green Bay yet (his visit was yesterday).
Clearly the writers heard of a possible visit to Green Bay and came up with a red-neck joke. In the palin case- the writers heard of her attendance at the game and came up with a quick pregnant daughter joke.
