Subject: Powell endorses Barack Obama

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/19/colin.powell/index.html

CNN) -- Former Secretary of State Colin Powell announced Sunday that he will be voting for Sen. Barack Obama, citing the Democrat's "ability to inspire" and the "inclusive nature of his campaign."

He has both style and substance. I think he is a transformational figure," Powell said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

"Obama displayed a steadiness. Showed intellectual vigor. He has a definitive way of doing business that will do us well," Powell said.

Powell, a retired U.S. general and a Republican, was once seen as a possible presidential candidate himself.

Powell said he questioned Sen. John McCain's judgment in picking Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate because he doesn't think she is ready to be president.

He also said he was disappointed with some of McCain's campaign tactics, such as bringing up Obama's ties to former 1960s radical Bill Ayers.

Powell served as secretary of state under President Bush from 2001 to 2005.

Colin Powell is respected in both political parties, and for someone to endorse someone from a different party, while not unheard of, is huge in this case.

I've been wondering about him and wondering which side he was going to show up for.

Wonder, if offered, would he accept another Cabinet position?

about there being nothing wrong with being a Muslim. It's about time someone came out and said that. Also, I liked that he said the choice of Sarah Palin as VP was part of his decision. That was the thing that changed my mind about McCain (No, I was never going to vote for him, but I thought he was the best Republican for the job. But choosing SP after meeting her just once was so irresponsible.)
Anyway, Go Obama!!!

I found that quote. From an article in The Toronto Star, which has more USA electoral coverage than any newspaper I've read from the USA. Go figure, anyway...here's some of it from Mon. Oct. 20/08: Powell Gives Salute To Obama by Tim Harper.

...
But he said that he was most troubled by McCain's refusal to shut down senior Republicans who have suggested Obama is a Muslim.

"Well, the correct answer is, he is not a Muslim, he's a Christian." Powell said. "He's always been a Christian."

"But the really right answer is, what if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer's no, that's not America.

"Is there something wrong with some 7-year-old Muslim-American kid believing that he or she could be president?"

Powell then told the story of New Jersey-born Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan, a 14-year-old boy at the time of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks who elisted in the military as soon as he could and died in Iraq serving his country...

It goes on, but I thought this part is the one that we've been discussing the most on this board: Obama's Christianity and misinfromation about it from the GOP.
