Subject: Why I Served
As a vet, I feel a need to at least express an opinion on this. I served my country for over six years. While I did not see combat, I did spend a couple years in Korea which was not always a pleasant or safe place to be. My time there did qualify me to become a member of the VFW, (Veterans of Foreign Wars).
When the first Gulf war started, I tried my best to reenlist to be with my buddies. Military time makes bonds which are beyond explanation unless you have served where your life depends on someone else’s doing their job. I was not able to be there but I longed to be with them. Not because I cared to see combat, but because they were my buddies.
Now I don't agree with all that is going on with public policy these days, but I still support our folks in the military. Those who serve don't get an opinion on where we go or why. They just go because they want to protect our freedom. It is up to others on where they should do that.
I also am not accusing you of not supporting our men; I am just giving my answer to your question. I also think young people should consider military time. It is a dangerous job but it makes a young person mature. It is not a job for everyone. But I am proud that for as much as this war is blasted in the press, it is still an all volunteer force serving there. These young folks volunteer knowing that they will likely serve in the Sandbox.
I guess we want others to follow us into the service because we want to share an experience with young folks that we found to be good for us and our country. I also offer a link to an Air Force web site. This is others giving an answer as to “Why I Serve?”.

Well said -- libs, 10:02:59 07/27/07 Fri [1]
Very well said Denny.
While I never served I was raised in a military family. My father served for 22+ years in the Navy of which he is very proud. All of children were raised to be proud of the men and women in uniform. While I think he was glad that his daughters did not enlist I think he would have liked to see his 2 sons enlist for at least one term. Like you said, serving with a group of people with whom your lives are in each others hands is incrediby bonding and maturing. Honestly, I think it would have done (and would still do) a great deal for my youngest brother. He needs the maturing that in my opinion only military service can provide.
Thank you for your service

Thanks, Denny -- lindalou, 21:44:30 07/27/07 Fri [1]
i remember thinking about it in High school, but I don't think I could have done the physical stuff. I admire anyone with the courage to follow their heart.

thanks for explaining that denny; see i just don't get it? -- jayjay, 18:50:11 07/28/07 Sat [1]
i was LUCKY to have been born of the female gender when my lottery birthday number came up..... i was 19 years old and if i'd been a male i would be on a plane to saigon yesterday.
my dad bless his heart was Air Force. a pilot and Engineer. i guess i just come from a long line of wimps because Daddy flunked out of WWII. he told his commander to basically fuck off.. oops. Honorable discharge serving his country by excavating bauxite in arkansas for the war effort.
denny i cannot tell you how much i truly admire the men and women giving their life's work for our country.
i just cannot imagine wanting my child to go risk his/her life in iraq. i mean i can't see any positive from it, other that what you just taught me about bonding. i just can't see any positive in what lil Bush and lil Karl could have possibly been thinking. My airport isn't any safer.
the American Civil War (or as we southernerds call it the War Between the States) didn't last this long.
