You would probably like Roland Martins article at CNN. Although to be honest...I don't understand the whole hysteria every year over holiday greetings. Why is "Happy Holidays" such an offensive greeting? Isn't it like reverse PC if you get upset by those 2 words because someone didn't wish you a Merry Christmas, but just 'Happy Holidays'? Are we really that arrogant to make an argument that someone can only give holiday greetings one way and if it not said YOUR way it is a sinister plot?

IMO using the term Happy Holidays is called c-o-m-m-o-n 'freakin' c-o-u-r-t-e-s-y and a reverence to all faiths in the holiday season, not a complete putdown to Christmas. I use it quite often, but I also say Merry Christmas when I know the person. I wouldn't expect that some stranger I passed that I wanted to give yuletide greetings to would give a damn how I did it (well..except I guess 'up yours' wouldn't be appropriate - LOL)! My feeling is that a “reasonable” person would not be offended by either Happy Holidays OR Merry Christmas if it is said in goodwill. That being said there sure are a lot of unreasonable people out there obviously on both sides. The fact article upon article is written this time of year about this 'greetings' subject boggles my imagination. Tis the season of holiday hysteria. Sometimes it’s amusing…sometimes it’s just sad.

which I do celebrate. In Vegas. I don't get worked up if someone wishes me a Merry Christmas even though I am not Christian. I take it as well-intentioned. Plus, I love any holiday that gets me some time off work. I'll celebrate anything for that!! So Merry Christmas, happy Winter Solstice, Happy Kwanzaa and a belated Happy Hanukkah! All of those and more!

like that article. My problem is not that someone wants to say happy holidays instead of Merry Christmas. I spent six years in the military ready to fight for that right. Where I believe the problem begins is when we become so politically correct that we ban the use of Christmas in schools and government buildings. In a country where 84% of the people claim to be Christian that is ludicrous.

And as for what stores and other businesses do, I support their right to do that. But I also practice my right to take my money elsewhere. Old Navy, Lowe’s, and other stores that choose to have “holiday” gifts or “holiday” trees as opposed to Christmas gifts and trees, are welcome to do so, but they should not expect to receive any business from me.

I know you know it's separation of church and state; that the Government cannot, under the Constitution, be seen to promote *any* religion. This is not to say that any and all mentions of "God" should be removed from anything having to do with the government. It means that there can't be the 10 Commandments in a courthouse or a nativity in front of City Hall. Those things are definitely related to one religion and it would appear that, by placing these things in such close proximity to government buildings, the government believes that Christianity is the only way to go. So, really, it's not political correctness; it's Constitutional correctness.

I think that the reason it bothers people, mostly, is because those people are among the majority. It makes sense to them to celebrate a very special and sacred event, and to let other people know their personal feelings about it.

However, being in the majority does not mean that other people's beliefs or feelings are important or that they aren't just as deeply held as yours are. To some people, seeing a nativity in front of a government building or in a store is very offensive. You might not agree or understand, but that's just the way it is.

If 83% of people in this country were Jewish and there were dreidels and menorhas and Happy Chanukah everywhere, I think people would probably get pretty sick of the majority completely overlooking their beliefs. And I think they'd have a point.

It's called the "establishment clause." Here's the text of the first amendment:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

That first part says that Congress cannot make any laws that would establish a "state religion." That's why we don't have a national religion. If we were to do something like that, it would negate everything that people came here to escape.
