Subject: I'm so freaking sick of the War on Christmas
In reply to: DennyG 's message, "To All Our Democrat Friends:" on 03:25:54 12/16/07 Sun

IMO using the term Happy Holidays is called c-o-m-m-o-n 'freakin' c-o-u-r-t-e-s-y and a reverence to all faiths in the holiday season, not a complete putdown to Christmas.

Thank you, SB.

I am so sick of the Neo-Pharisees acting like they are being oppressed b/c they can't impose their particular religion on everyone.

"Seasons' Greetings" first appeared on Christmas cards 150+ years ago. "Happy Holidays" is one of my favorite Christmas songs.

Anyone remember the real War on Christmas? It was against the commercialization of the holiday. You shouldn't WANT a store saying "Merry Christmas" in order to sell you stuff. The Grinch and Charlie Brown Christmas specials from the 60s have the same message--without bells and bows, without pink aluminum Christmas trees, Christmas comes all the same b/c Christmas really has nothing to do with stuff. It's supposed to be a time of Peace on Earth, Good Will to All.

The only time Jesus really lost his temper in the Bible is when he kicked the money changers out of the temple. Commerce and religion, or more commerce *using* religion really irritated the Christ.

We lost that war. Christmas is a big national secular holiday now, driving the country's economic fortunes.

This new, fabricated War on Christmas (tm) is just Neo-Pharisees stamping their feet if the entire country doesn't kowtow and acknowledge their Present-fest--without acknowledging any other winter celebration. Their "Merry Christmas" isn't actually a greeting wishing joy for others, but a demand-->worship my way or else.

Don't believe me? Want a true Christian story that proves it? http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/12/12/subway.attack/ (yeah, it's cnn, but that's just the first link that came up when Googled)

Jews carrying a menorah get on the Q train in New York. Christians yell "Merry Christmas" at them. One man replies "Happy Hanukkah" b/c strangely enough, even though Christmas is still a month away, it is one of the 8 days of Hanukkah. One of the Christians responds "Oh yeah, Hannukkahs the day the Jews killed Jesus." (Actually, that was the Romans and Good Friday/Easter, but that's another tale) The Christians then begin to kick the sh!t out of the Jews for not replying with "Merry Christmas".

Here's where it gets really good.

Who comes to the Jewish man's aid? A Muslim. Yep, the currently most reviled religious outcasts in America. Hassan Askari -- a Muslim student from Bangladesh stepped up and helped.

It's a real life Good Samaritan. Samaritans were reviled in Jesus' time--that's what makes the parable so powerful. The so-called good people walk on by while that "no-good" Samaritan acted against his own self-interest to benefit another person.

So we lose again. The people who think they are "defending" their faith by insisting on "Merry Christmas" are actually defiling it by disregarding Jesus' words to love and forgive. It's holier-than-thou crap that's against everything Jesus said.

"Merry Christmas." It used to be such a nice thing to hear. Now it sounds like a big "Eff You" and I hate that people have done that to the holiday.

We lose again.

Have a wonderful Christmas. One of my resolutions this year is to meet a few RTer's, and you are just a couple hundred miles away. I hope I can meet you this year.
