(*) As Ice bulleted out of her hiding place, Kosses shrank lower into the grass. It was about timing now. She counted the beat of the stride the deer made. Time slurred together in slow motion and she saw Ice’s teeth flash brilliantly as her jaw snapped shut to close off her growl. She saw the deer’s eyes widen with horror, saw the muscles ripple on the first landing after that first bolt into the air.

Kosses was quivering with excitement. Her mind had shut off. She was running purely on instinct. As the deer’s legs folded under him again to propel forward, Kosses watched as his legs tucked tight and his eyes measured the ground for good footing. His hooves kissed the ground again and once more were brought to his body. He was two strides away. Kosses’ drew back more against the earth; her haunches tightened like rubber band slingshots around fingers of children. He was leaping so high, choosing his ground so well, what if he spotted her before she sprang out for him?

Kosses could now hear the growls radiating from Ice. She knew the moment was crucial. So as he fell to the earth in one more graceful leap, Kosses struck before his hind legs could even kiss the dirt. Saliva slung from her open mouth as she leapt upward and at this throat. Her front legs spread wide, hoping that if her aim was true her weight would push the creature to the ground and she’d have one leg on either side of his throat to keep him down as Ice clasped on for the kill.

As she sprang into the air, her eyes flashed with a danger not know by many. Ice probably missed the fury that was residing there since she was busy driving that stupid deer into Kosses’ gapping maw. Kosses made contact in one solid crash. She was fueled by the frantic cry of surprise from the deer, by the wide eyes, the flaring nostrils, the look of pure fright the creature had on its face. They collided into a mass; Kosses bent his neck to the earth. The legs, however, hadn’t come out from under him completely. He spread them, bracing himself on his knees like a zebra in a death grip with a lion. She clutched hard, shook her head, and did anything to knock his balance loose. This is where having a team mate was the most rewarding. Kosses locked eyes with the beast at the moment he realized there was no escaping the two bitches. She loved that recognition. She loved that her mouth was pooling with his blood. He struggled on. He fought. She watched with admiration that would soon fill her belly.(*)
