Subject: "Who says it was a lie?" Dixie smiled and headed to Roy's bedside...
In reply to: Sally 's message, ""Dad? Uncle Johnny was hurt too, wasn't he?" Chris DeSoto..." on 16:19:20 09/12/99 Sun

Roy and Joanne were at a loss to explain it --- with everything else that had happened, an argument with Dixie was the last thing he needed. But she was usually so sensitive to other's feelings...

Roy's head dropped wearily back on the pillow, the fight gone out of him. "Dix, I don't understand..." his voice trembled a little and Dixie momentarily felt sorry for the way she'd explained things.

She stepped forward and put a hand on Roy's arm, hoping to put his mind at ease. "Roy, Hank Stanley just called from UCLA."

Joanne stepped closer to the bed and took Roy's hand in hers protectively, thoroughly confused but wanting to be there for her husband. She noticed the faint trembling of his body when she enclosed his hand in hers.

Roy said nothing -- he wasn't sure he was ready to handle any more bad news....

"Roy, there was a mix-up at the hospital. Johnny's alive!" Dix couldn't keep the smile out of her face, and she hoped to see that same bright smile appear on his.

But Roy said nothing. Joanne appeared to be in shock, unable to speak herself. She alternated between watching Roy's reaction and trying to search Dixie's face...trying to register what she had said.

Roy lay there, his mind reeling. He wanted desperately to believe what Dixie was saying was true -- but he had already been bitterly disappointed once -- and wasn't sure he could bear to get his hopes up, only to have them dashed again. He swallowed a lump in his throat and struggled with himself, wanting to believe but...

Dixie could read Roy's distress. "Listen to me Roy. I don't know all the details, but somewhere along the line, somebody screwed up. Johnny is hurt badly, but he's in ICU right now. Hank has already talked to him."

Roy dared to hope. "He's...he's alive?" his voice was trembling and quiet, almost as if he were afraid to even speak the words.

"He sure is. And probably worrying his head off about you, if I know John Gage..."

"He's alive." This time it wasn't a question. He reached out to Joanne, as if needing her touch, to be sure this was all real. Joanne leaned forward and pulled him into a tight embrace.

Roy welcomed the arms of this woman who, along with his children, had been such a significant part of his life for so many years. And Johnny. He could hardly believe it...this man who was like a brother to him... He couldn't believe he'd gotten his best friend back. God have given him back. 'Johnny's alive!' Roy's mind joyously uttered the words over and over again as he wept, this time with tears of joy.

Dixie's heart felt ready to burst as the couple shared this wonderful news...watched them clinging together, crying...but this time because of happiness.

Watching a moment longer, she smiled and left the two of them alone...
