I completley agree with you that "the story of Robert Johnson at the crossroads is a metaphor that both aspiring and successful musicians follow". Regardless of a musicians talent, they all end up "selling out" or "selling their soul" before they make it big. some successful musicians even sell out in order to keep their fame.
