from what i understand,michael wasn't crazy about his given name 'eugene orowitz' and also you have to remember at that time(the50s)jewish actors (and also italian actors)were told to de-ethnicize their names.he was also told to do this by his agent.so he looked in the phone book,and found the name 'michael lane',and he liked the name.however,another actor had that name,so he went back to the phone book,and found michael landon,found that no other actor had that name,so he kept,and that's what he was known as from that time on.hope that answers your question!
